“A species considered rare in Portugal, its legal protection being essential to the conservation of a species of which there are only around 100 specimens in Portugal”, “a tree of rare beauty during the flowering season and of high botanical and landscape value, contributing to the value scenic space”, says the Official Gazette, which classifies the red-flowered eucalyptus (Corymbia ficifolia) in Bensaúde Park, in Benfica, as a grove of public interest.
This one, which we can see near the Cervejaria Portugália do Cais do Sodré, on the riverbank, is not classified and therefore runs the risk of one day being slaughtered by someone who is unaware of its rarity and beauty . It should be clarified that this is not the case with the bar/restaurant Lust in Rio, where the tree is located. When the original Meninos do Rio was created, the owner filled the terrace with trees that are still there, and it is noteworthy that the fence was built to make room for the eucalyptus. But the truth is that, without classification, this Corymbia ficifolia becomes dependent on the sensitivity of a future owner.
